Province of Enna History

Main town (Town of 357,18 km2 with 28273 inhabitants) of the central Sicily placed at 948 meters upon the sea level. on a shelf of the Erei mountains.
Enna, it is the littlest main town of the island and she became main town of the province in 1927; until this date the centre itself is called Castrogiovanni.
The town extends itself, in beautiful panoramic position, with characteristics alleys on a balcony, from which the glance dominates to wide ray the high valley of the Dittaino river, and it was given for this reason the appellativo of 'belvedere of Sicily'. Truly, with his 948 meters, it is also the highest province chief town in Italy.

Enna prevalently presents an economy agricultural, supported by a commercial of the local products. It is also an important mineral centre.

At present, thanks to his panoramic beauties, it shows a progressive tourist development, which could certainly improve with investments centred on the expansion of the modest hotel equipment and of the services.
His territory was lived since the prehistoric age.
In the last few years, in fact, excavations in the near zone of the Pergusa's Lake took interesting finds of prehistoric epoch which confirm the existence of settlements of organized communities to the light.
For his happy geographic position and the environmental characteristics, he did collective rise in the people's imaginary one of the legend as very beautiful, as that of Proserpina, daughter of Cerere, abducted by Pluto and taken to the Hells, from which she revives to every spring ancients. This legendary episode is
placed in the zone of the Pergusa's Lake. Otherwise, we do not forget how much tells us Cicerone of the presence in the vicinity of the living of the Cerere's Fortress, where statues of the Cerere goddess had to be, the divinity of the fertility that in the Enna territory underwent a particular cult.
Enna is placed at the centre of Sicily and for this reason Callimaco called it "navel" of the island. It was a "siculo" ancient village and subsequently "Siracusana" colony since the VII century B.c.

It was well known domain of the "Cartaginesi" and then municipality of Rome. History hands down the famous episode of the rebellion of the slaves leaded by Euno in the 135 B.C.
It was to struggle for the freedom fought against Romans which were able to soothe the rebels' resistance only after two years of war.
It was important fortress during the Enna Middle Ages. And the domain underwent for his strategic position to "Saraceno", "Norman", "Svevo" and "Aragonese" dominium. Enna was dear town to Federico II Of Svevia and Federico II Of Aragona, which convoked the Sicilian parliament in 1324.
