Nature in the Regional Park of Etna

Wildlife

Life is hard for creatures living on an active volcano that is also partly settled by human inhabitants. Wolves, wild boar, deer, griffins, otters, martens and eagle-owis have all died out, but recently the profection offered by the Mount Etna enable this sad tendency to be partially reversed, and the golden eagle now nests once more on the mountain. Visitors interested in wildlife will be able to see many amphibian and reptile species, such as frogs, toad, tortoises, green lizards, colubers, leopard, snakes and vipers. Birds include sparrow hanks, buzzards, kestrels, peregrines, barn owls, scops owls, tawny owls, long-eared owls, wood pigeons and quails, together with many passerine species. Among the mammals and hedgehogs, rabbits, hares, dormice and porcupines, and carnivores include foxes, weasels and few wildcats.
